Ibi is a working town. Its six industrial estates hold more than 550 companies, most of them in plastics and metal, and AIJU, the technology institute for toys and children’s products, has its base here. Engineers, buyers, auditors and technicians come for days or weeks, and many rent a flat in town rather than a hotel room.
So it happens: late back from the plant, or early out of the door for the morning meeting, and the flat door clicks shut with the keys on the kitchen counter.
Ring the landlord or the agency first
They may have a spare set nearby, or a neighbour who holds one. A ten-minute walk to collect a key beats any call-out. Have the contract or their messages on your phone: you will need them either way.
If nobody has a key
Ring a locksmith. Say:
- the street and number, floor and door letter, and whether the street door of the block is open;
- how the door shut: pulled to behind you, or locked with the key from outside;
- that you are renting, and who the landlord or the agency is.
The call can be in English from start to finish. You will hear an estimate of the drive for that address at that hour, not a promise.
Proof that you live there
A locksmith has to be satisfied that you are entitled to open the door. A foreign passport does not show a Spanish address, so the rental contract, the booking confirmation or the landlord on the phone does that job. If the papers are inside, they are checked once the door is open.
Pulled shut or locked
That one detail decides most of the job. A door that only clicked shut usually opens through the latch, without a mark. A door locked with the key, especially an armoured door, has to be worked through the cylinder. How each kind of door is opened.
Afterwards
Tell the landlord what happened and send them the invoice details: if the cylinder had to be replaced, they will want to know, and only they can decide about keys for the new one. Whether you or they pay depends on your agreement with them, so it is worth asking before anyone sets off.
